Lesson provided by the Special Education Department
What is Draw Me In?
Read out loud.
As far back as the days of cave drawings, art has been a way for humans to express themselves. Many children begin to communicate through the language of art even before using words. We’ve often heard, “A picture is worth a thousand words.”
The theme for Inclusive Schools Week 2023 is Draw Me In! Participating in art provides a pathway to self-discovery, and sharing art opens doors to understanding and respecting different ways of thinking. The need to belong is a basic need of all students and an integral component of effective inclusive schools. To be inclusive implies a fundamental commitment to building relationships among students, families, educators, and the community to support safe and positive learning environments.
As we celebrate Inclusive Schools Week 2023, let us respond—Draw Me In!

Activity
Today your advisory is to create a poster.
Needed Materials: poster, coloring materials
Instructions: (Examples below)
Each advisory has been given a poster with a word written on it. Your job is to “Draw Me In” by drawing what that word means to you and how it relates to Inclusion. Work together to come up with an idea on how you can best represent your word. The posters will be used to create a “mural” on the bulletin board at the front entrance of the school.
Note: Please hold posters in landscape orientation and put the advisor's name on the bottom right.
Poster Contest: We are looking for neat, colorful, creative posters that represent inclusion. The winning advisory will win a bagel breakfast!
***Return your bag and poster at the end of the period***
