What is a time buster?
Read out loud.
Time management is the ability to plan and control how you spend your time. It's an important skill for everyone, but it can be especially helpful for middle schoolers, who are juggling more responsibilities than ever before. Unfortunately managing your time can be a challenge when there are so many distractions. A time buster is an activity or habit that takes up a lot of time without providing much value. It's like a time thief that steals away your precious minutes and hours, leaving you feeling unproductive and unfulfilled. Time busters can be sneaky. They often disguise themselves as fun or relaxing activities, but they can quickly become a drain on your time and energy.

Activity & Discussion
Today your advisory will create a list of time busters and ways to stop them from interupting you.
Needed Materials: handouts, something to write with (everyone)
Instructions:
1. Hand each student a time buster handout.
2. Time busters are all around us. Take a moment to rate the time busters list from the most interuptive with a number 1 to the least interuptive with a 10. When you are done write your top 3 on the clipboard.
3. Allow students to complete the task.
4. Have students share what were their top 3 time busters are and what was the least with the group. Discuss: Why do they think these intrupt them the most? Would they call them addictive? Do these time busters happen only during after school time or do they happen during school as well. Are their any time busters that are not on the list that distract you?
5. As we get older trying to manage our time and avoid time busters can be tricky. In the left column write down 4 ways you handle your time busters.
6. Allow time for students to complete the task.
7. Have students share the different ways they are able to avoid or stop their time busters. As new ideas are being discussed have the students fill in the empty column on the right of any ideas that are new to them.
